In the UI, Options>>Directories also confirms 'roms' as the path for ROMs.

This is the only .chd file game I have, so maybe it's something to do with that???

It's also finding all the other files in the taitogn.zip fine. Maybe it's the .chd file itself that it doesn't like? Sourced it from emuparadise.

I think the CHD file MUST be in a raycris folder itself inside the roms folder ;)

Gentlemen, I apologise for wasting your time, I am a complete idiot. It would seem that in my eagerness to play the game, I somehow stopped the download just prior to completion in such a way that it looked like I got the full thing, but I didn't. Basically the .chd wasn't the full thing, that's why it failed. I downloaded it again and everything is fixed.

No problem, mate. That was actually gonna be my next suggestion. Since everything else checked out, a corrupt download seemed to be the most likely cause. I'm glad you figured it out.

Voljega, I don't know which version it happened in, but in newer MAME the CHD sub-directory structure isn't required anymore.

So my set should now be upgraded to 0.154.

Is this version new enough to not use folder for CHD anymore ?

I was just going through some recent MAME versions that I'm gonna chuck out soon. In 0.152 I noticed that the 3rd Strike CHD was sitting in the ROMs folder with the ROM zip (no CHD sub-folder). That must've been around the time I first became aware of the change. I checked and the game loads.
