IBM Thinkpad T20 Capable??

Post by Chevron » December 1st, 2012, 4:20 pm

So im looking at my 2 laptops i have for new projects.

IBM thinkpad T20
Pentium 3 700mhz
Max 512 ram

Would this be enough to run both mala and mame?
What kind of games would you be able to play on a low end specs like these?

Or would these be best suited to being for a dedicated game liek galaga or pacman?
I know my brother inlaw is hugs galaga/galaxian fan and would be VERY happen to get project as a gift if it could play those games.

So thoughts on what to do would be greatfully appreciated.
Plans are either of the following

Mama and mala with all games capable on this
Mame and mala with a select few games like pacman and galaga
Mama auto starting a dedicated game like galaga

Thoughts please.

On my old WinXP Pentium 4 tower, 2.93GHz, 1GB RAM, I could run a huge amount of working MAME games at full or near full performance; every 2D game from classic to modern, with a few rare exceptions, and even some of the simpler 3D games, like Tekken 2, Virtua Racing, etc. There's a lot to choose from when it comes to turning on old piece of junk PC into a classic gaming beast.

I tried afew things today
For love nor money i could not get tinyxp installed, well it installed but blue screen with license error, never in my years in IT i have seen this before.

after that i tried KnoppixMame - Turned out to be alive cd so was not able to install it to HDD

Then i tried Puppy arcade 10
can use this as a live cd then install to HDD if you wanted, This i did.
i installed Puppy Arcade 10 with galaga/galaxian as the only rom
it ran, but was a bit slow.
I think this may have been due to the fact that puppy arcade has a new(ish) version of Mame installed.
It also has emulators for MANY consoles pre-installed.
I may look into this on a better spec-ed PC.

I know NOTHING about Linux so i was unable to install a lower end version of Mame to test.

If anyone one knows about installing/compiling early pre 0.36 Mame on Linux please link me.
Also if you know Linux how can i have it so this one game auto starts on boot up with no GUI.
just boot and straight start game.

So basically what im after is a boot straight to game option on OS.

dos os would work if i could get Mame with no nag hi-score boot straight to a game.

Has anyone done something similar or be able to point me in the right direction?

Cheers

I have been reading a lot about Raspberry Pi MAME build which can be set up to boot into directly into mame32 or frontend.
With such little hardware, you should go with Linux mame.
