David Bowie

Post by Hierophant » January 14th, 2016, 3:18 am

David Bowie. 1947 - 2016. My hero.

I was raised on Bowie music. Somehow, I feel as though I've lost a dear friend. It's been truly devastating.

I was fortunate to have seen him live in concert on two occasions here Down Under. The first song that usually comes to mind when I think of Bowie is The Width of a Circle. It had a huge impact on my teenage years. At the time, I was not yet fully aware of other classic rockers like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Looking back on it now, The Width of a Circle was a perfect primer for the exploration of heavier forms of music.

Not only that, though. As with a band like Queen, Bowie's oeuvre is so diverse that it can prepare the listener for many types of music that might not otherwise be so easily acceptable to the ear. That's a sign of a real master.

Thanks, Panther. Oh yeah, man, Lemmy was one of the hardest of hard rockers. I raised a glass in his honour when I heard. I was lucky to see him perform one time here in Oz. Another thing I love about Lemmy is that he was also in the mighty Hawkwind. That's too damn cool.

Motorhead's most iconic song has to be Ace of Spades. It's amazing to think that such a raw song was actually a hit back then. That just wouldn't happen anymore in these days of mass-produced, auto-tuned soft Pop.

I heard some crazy news on the radio at work today. They were saying that Bowie currently has 17 albums in the Aussie top 100 right now. Wow, SEVENTEEN! Apparently it's a new record for our charts. I dunno what the old record was, but I betchya Bowie @!#?@! smashed it!!!
